The structure of the Chatham Cup was altered in 1970. The traditional North and South Island finals were replaced. The draw became slightly more open and the survivors among the the provincial winners were matched against the National League teams. The changes brought: - the first Cup match in the North Island between North and South Island clubs, in anything but the final (Wanganui Athletic v Nelson United) - the first North Island team to play a Chatham Cup match in Christchurch (Western Suburbs v New Brighton) - the first North Island team to play a Chatham Cup match in Dunedin (Stop Out v Caversham) - the first final between two North Island teams Qualifying Rounds ----------------- Auckland: Round 1 Eden 5-1 Ponsonby Takapuna City 1-0 Central East Coast Bays 5-2 University Metro College 3-1 Mt Roskill Birkenhead United 4-0 Lynndale Henderson 6-1 Te Atatu North Shore United 1-0 Mt Albert Pt Chevalier 8-1 Onehunga-Mangere Round 2 Eden 3-1 Takapuna City [aet] East Coast Bays 1-0 Metro College Birkenhead United 3-1 Henderson [aet] North Shore United 2-1 Pt Chevalier Finals Eden 5-1 East Coast Bays Birkenhead United 2-1 North Shore United Bay of Plenty: Final Rotorua City 4-1 Whakatane Town Canterbury: Round 1 New Brighton 2-1 Halswell United Western 4-1 University Rangers 3-0 HSOB Round 2 Western 5-1 Burndale United New Brighton 4-1 Woolston WMC Technical 6-2 Rangers [aet] Shamrock 0-0 Christchurch City [Shamrock won on corners] Semi-finals New Brighton 2-2, 4-1 Shamrock Western 3-2 Technical Final New Brighton 1-0 Western Franklin: Round 1 Papatoetoe 5-2 Massey Rovers Final Papatoetoe 4-1 Manurewa Hawkes Bay: Round 1 Napier Rovers 3-2 Havelock North Wanderers Leopard United 4-0 Taradale Final Napier Rovers 10-0 Leopard United Manawatu: Round 1 Palmerston City 5-1 St Andrews Massey University 16-1 Dannevirke-Ruahine Utd Levin United bye (Manawatu Rovers disqualified) Kiwi United wbd Winchester Semi-finals Palmerston City 9-1 Massey University Kiwi United 4-2 Levin United Final Palmerston City 4-0 Kiwi United Nelson: Round 1 Richmond Athletic 2-0 Motueka Nelson United wbd Nelson City Final Nelson United wbd Richmond Athletic Northland: Final Whangarei 8-1 Cruising Club Otago: Round 1 Northern 3-0 Mosgiel Dunedin City 2-0 St Kilda-Mornington Roslyn-Wakari 2-0 Dunedin Technical Semi-finals Dunedin City 1-0 Northern [aet] Caversham 4-0 Roslyn-Wakari Final Caversham 7-1 Dunedin City Poverty Bay: Final Gisborne Thistle 5-0 Wairoa South Canterbury: Final Timaru City 4-1 Northern Hearts Southland: Round 1 Waihopai 5-5 Southland BHS [Waihopai won on corners] Semi-finals United 1-1 Queens Park [United won on corners] Thistle 9-1 Waihopai Final Thistle 3-1 United Taranaki: Round 1 Stratford 2-1 New Plymouth City Semi-finals New Plymouth OB 2-0 Moturoa [aet] Stratford 4-2 New Plymouth United Final New Plymouth OB 3-0 Stratford Waikato: Round 1 Hamilton 2-1 Huntly Thistle [aet] Tokoroa 3-1 Claudelands Rovers Final Hamilton 1-0 Tokoroa Wanganui: Final Wanganui Athletic wbd Wanganui City Wellington: Round 1 Naenae Old Boys 11-0 Wainuiomata Waterside 3-1 Brooklyn United Johnson Villa 3-1 Karori Swifts Round 2 Miramar Rangers 4-0 Raumati Hearts Marist 1-0 Stokes Valley Petone 2-1 Wellington WMC Upper Hutt United 4-2 University [aet] Seatoun 3-1 CYFC Naenae Old Boys 6-1 Lower Hutt City Johnson Villa 3-2 Waterside Northern 1-0 Wellington Diamond United Round 3 Miramar Rangers 1-0 Seatoun Naenae Old Boys 6-3 Petone Johnson Villa 1-0 Upper Hutt United Northern 1-0 Marist Semi-finals Miramar Rangers 6-0 Naenae Old Boys Johnson Villa 2-0 Northern Final Miramar Rangers 2-0 Johnson Villa SUMMARY Association Entries Representative ----------- ------- -------------- North Island: Northland 2 Whangarei Auckland 16 Eden, Birkenhead United Franklin 3 Papatoetoe Waikato 4 Hamilton Bay of Plenty 2 Rotorua City Poverty Bay 2 Gisborne Thistle Taranaki 5 Old Boys Wanganui 2 Wanganui Athletic Manawatu 8 Palmerston City Hawkes Bay 4 Napier Rovers Wellington 19 Miramar Rangers South Island: Marlborough 1 Grosvenor Rovers Nelson 4 Nelson United Canterbury 11 New Brighton South Canterbury 2 Timaru City Otago 7 Caversham Southland 5 Invercargill Thistle National League 8 COMPETITION PROPER Round 1 ------- Wanganui Athletic 6-2 New Plymouth Old Boys Nelson United 6-1 Grosvenor Rovers Round 2 ------- Papatoetoe 1-2 Whangarei Hamilton 1-0 Rotorua City Eden 4-1 Birkenhead United Wanganui Athletic 0-2 Nelson United Napier Rovers 2-1 Gisborne Thistle [aet] Miramar Rangers 1-2 Palmerston City New Brighton 4-0 Timaru City Invercargill Thistle 2-3 Caversham Round 3 ------- Mt Wellington 4-2 Eden [aet] Blockhouse Bay 6-1 Whangarei Napier Rovers 0-10 Hamilton Gisborne City 1-4 Eastern Suburbs [aet] Stop Out 3-2 Nelson United Hungaria 3-1 Palmerston City Caversham 3-2 Christchurch United New Brighton 1-2 Western Suburbs [aet] Round 4 ------- Eastern Suburbs 2-2 Blockhouse Bay [Blockhouse Bay won on corners] Hamilton 2-1 Hungaria Western Suburbs 3-1 Mt Wellington Caversham 5-3 Stop Out Semi-finals ----------- Hamilton 1-2 Blockhouse Bay Western Suburbs 2-0 Caversham Final ----- [Sep-5] Basin Reserve, Wellington Blockhouse Bay 2-2 Western Suburbs [Shaw 2 (1 pen) -
